Magical Vocabulum: Consecrate- Dedicate formally for a divine purpose.

I came from a background of believing only clergy could consecrate something, but truth is anyone can consecrate something. We consecrate tools for spiritual use, we consecrate our dedicated space for crystals, and we even consecrate the dining room table for family meal time. It’s a practice that has evolved and been modernized over the years. We just probably don’t recognize that what we’re doing is consecration.

There’s a beautiful artistry in the practice of consecrating. Maybe the word itself mystifies you. To consecrate something is to create a purpose filled intention or dedication. You might want to consecrate your yoga mat, your new car, an office, or even your bath time ritual supplies. There’s an intuitive creativity in this practice and you get to decide what that looks like. This is where you are the priestess and you set the intentions for your intuitive practice. One effective way to consecrate is with a practice called smudging. When we smudge, we smoldering a sage bundle so the smoke can cleanse the space or item to prepare for ceremony.

We live in a world where leaders often seek to control every aspect of our lives, but we retain the power of personal autonomy. Venturing into this intuitively free practice can sometimes bring harsh criticism from loved ones, but they don’t have spiritual authority over you unless you give it to them. This Magical Vocabulum lesson comes from ancient practices dating back to ancient Egypt.

Anoint: to smear with oil for consecrating. To make holy or devote.

Ancient peoples anointed their tools, sacred spaces, and even themselves for holy work. Even the Bible tells the stories of anointing with precious oils. A practice many people have neglected and yet holds so much power. I feel we are in a time when our land deserves and demands our consecrated attention, intentions, and prayers.

When we use perfumes made of essential oils, botanicals, and even absolutes we are layering our intentions with these aromatic essences. Studying the intricate parts of each plant, the oils are taken from, opens a door of meditation to deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. It’s a practice to heighten and deepen our senses as well as empowering our intentions to manifest the impossible in our lives.

I include a hand crafted anointing blend with several of my Altar Kits, because I understand the power and importance in anointing.

The only magical thing I know of my grandmother, on my father’s side, was that she read tea leaves. I wish I could’ve had the chance to be inquisitive about her spiritual beliefs, but it wasn’t a thought on my mind at the time. Oh, if we could turn back time! Needless to say, my knowledge of reading tea leaves had to come through research, practice, and meditation. One of the beautiful things about intuitive arts is the liberality of your own creative style.

Tasseography: to gain divine insight by discerning tea leaves. In Middle Eastern Traditions, coffee grounds are read for divine guidance. Did you know you could also read sediment left behind by wine? Just another good reason to pour a glass.

There are psychological aspects to reading tea leaves, similar to that of inkblot readings by your psychologist. It all started with Swiss Freudian Psychiatrist, Hermann Rorschach. It’s been a method of examining a person’s personality characteristics and emotional wellbeing. The methods between the psychological reading of inkblots and the metaphysical have similarities, but also some distinctive differences.

A psychologist may dissect what you see in the inkblot as a method of investigating what has already taken place in you. Whereas a tea leaf reader may look into your future with what’s left in your tea cup. Both methods can be equally helpful for our overall wellness.

Tasseography is widely known of in the Gypsy community, but people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds can be a talented tea leaf readers. Intuitive Art is a craft that any artist can tap into and develop their skills in a way that’s productive for them. I don’t buy into the idea that any particular region has the corner market on spiritual skills and talents, though I do recognize and honor the depth each holds in their heritage. If you’re feeling called to deepen your soul with tasseography, start with the Gypsy community and see where they take you.

There are graphics online that show symbolism and shapes to guide you in interpreting the images you see in the bottom of the cup, but also consider writing your own key based on what your intuition teaches you.

The word ‘altar’ has some negative connotations for some, depending on what they were taught. An altar has been used by peoples from all different regions and spiritual paths throughout history and even in our modern day use of wedding ceremonies.

Altar- an elevated place for honoring deity or ancestors. Not to be confused with ‘alter’, which means ‘to change’ as in, making alterations.

While an altar is a physical place of reverence, the verb ‘alter’ is what can happen when we spend time in spiritual practice at an altar. If we aren’t growing and transforming through spiritual practice then we’re missing out on what we can accomplish in this life.

An altar can be set up to honor and beseech a deity for assistance or knowledge, but one does not need to seek a deity to work with an altar. An altar can be used to help you focus on intentions and goals you want to see manifest or to serve as a purpose of keeping us mindful of how we use our influence in the world. I sometimes arrange a mini family altar to support communication when the family is at odds with each other.
