Description
One of the most prominent purposes of the abalone shell is for jewelry, made from the inner iridescent shell we call Mother-of-Pearl. Her jewelry can be beautiful, but it’s just the surface of what we can learn from her. How sad is it that we don’t take the time to really learn life’s lessons that the abalone has to offer us? We live in a very selfish society and we forget to be givers, we close ourselves up and merely exist as we wait to die. Abalone is here to teach us to create life and to learn to grow, but our human nature leans toward being introverted and we do that because we fear. That is our main enemy, you know. Fear. However, the very shell of the abalone teaches us lessons about protection. With the proper protection we have nothing to fear. Abalone is a wise creature if we’ll just listen to what it has to teach us.
The shell is a build up of calcium carbonate to create a protective barrier over the flesh of the creature. Much like the protection we try to create to protect our hearts and emotions. We know calcium is a nutrient we need to have strong bones, nails, teeth, and even for hair health. Did you notice that keyword? Strong! While our hearts can be vulnerable like the creature under the shell, we really are here to be strong individuals with big hearts. The shell is multilayered tiles containing protein and the shell layers will slide instead of shatter. When the shell is hit the proteins stretches and absorbs the energy. When we get hit in life, what do we do with that? Cower and hide? Well hiding can be a good choice if we need time to heal, but we also need to allow ourselves to build strength and learn to stretch with what comes our way. Can we learn to absorb the energy and transmute it into something good? Of course we can and abalone teaches us this.
Abalone holds the energy of Mother Ocean our empowerment for emotions. Water is the element of emotion, associated with the zodiac signs of Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio. We don’t have to be stoic or rigid in our emotions as a means of protecting ourselves. We can be strong and vulnerable at the same time. We build boundaries for ourselves to create a layer of protection while still giving our gift of emotional wellness to the world. The water signs are here to show us how to learn from our emotions.
The holes in the abalone are for respiratory purposes and corresponds to the air element. Air is all about thinking, higher thinking to be exact. Abalone teaches us to continue to feed intellect so we can be better teachers and counselors. When we breathe in oxygen we’re actually feeding our brains and equipping them to work stronger.
Those holes have a dual purpose in that not only are they for respiratory purposes, but also for fertility. But lets look at how fertility shows up in our philosophy. What we learn, we can teach to others. We’re essentially fertilizing others with information so we can build a strong society. Building a stronger society can also help influence a generation of dreamers and dreamers are builders.
Ralph W. Sockman said, “The larger the island of knowledge, the longer the shoreline of wonder.” When we can allow ourselves to expand our minds, hearts, and imaginations we can then be masters of creating a new future.
Working with abalone breathes so much life and these life lessons are essential for personal, intellectual, and spiritual growth.
Aesthetically, the red abalone serves as a beautiful decor piece for your altar and smudging practice. Keeping all her life lessons in mind as you perform daily ritual.
